Steel Frame Construction With Building Codes & Certified Drawings
By Richard Bose

Steel frame generally refers to a construction technique which makes use of horizontal steel I-beams and vertical steel columns in the shape of rectangular grid to support the roof, walls and floors of a building. The development of easy and cost-effective steel framing techniques has helped realizing skyscrapers of today. Steel framing offers exceptional design flexibility due to the intrinsic strength of steel allowing it to spread over a longer distance than wood and also withstand seismic and wind loads.

The International Code Council's (ICC) International Residential Code (IRC) and International Building Code (IBC) provide complete guidance for standard steel framing. These building codes are largely accepted as the governing building codes by most building departments in the US. IRC and IBC codes also reference a series of standards developed by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and the American Iron & steel Institute (AISI) to furnish additional information for the design of steel buildings and structures.

Just like any other pre-fabricated structural components, floor sections, walls and roof trusses require engineered layouts and drawings for local building code approval. Steel truss and panel fabricators are required to supply engineered designs, in accordance with the contractor's architectural drawings. Commercial or non-residential construction designs will require an engineer's review as well as seal irrespective of material being used for construction.

The very first step in executing any project should be a formal discussion with the local building authority. This is the best way to find out specifics that will affect your project and building code jurisdiction in future.

The process of examining a steel frame is similar to what is encountered for most structural techniques - first the reviewer will ensure that all specifications are accurate and in agreement with local code provisions. Then Architectural drawings are reviewed to make sure that wall types are accurately marked and details are provided for important connections, and electrical, mechanical and plumbing drawings are matched with the structural drawings. Finally, Structural drawings will be examined for consistency with the architectural drawings to make sure that exact detailing is supplied for members like steel trusses, studs and bar joists.

A bed with a wood bed frame is much better and much stronger than a bed with a metal bed frame. This is because metal bed frames are very prone to rusting, warping, and bending due to constant usage. They also tend to be squeaky. The wood frames, on the other hand, are very sturdy and hard solid. They have the capability to last for several years, and even much longer if cared for properly. They may even last until the future generations. They just have to be cleaned well with a sponge and soapy water at least once every year. And with regular dusting, the wood frames will be well preserved.

Wood bed frames may also be painted with colorful paint or varnish for an added splendor. Other people are in doubt of using wood frames in their modernly designed bedrooms because they think that such furniture will simply not fit in. However, this is not true because a wood frame may look classy when properly blended with the apt decorations and ornaments. Modern interior decorations may be combined and incorporated with the classic feel of the wood bed frames for a more elegant and unique ambiance.

Bicycle Frame Jig

Bicycle Frame Jig

A motorcycle frame jig is the best way to keep components in place when fabricating a bike frame. Typically mounted on wheels it lets the fabricator turn the frame while working. This is advantageous when you are pulling a long hose connected to a welding tank. Although it will not keep the frame "straight and true", it will keep the various tubes in place for welding. The welding process itself can distort the tubes as they are heated. The use of this device will allow the custom designer to work alone. This apparatus also lets you put the frame off to a corner when you are not actively working on it.

Bicycle Frame Jig

Almost all commercial motorcycle frame jigs have solid steel bases, making them extremely sturdy. While each one has a pinion to hold the frame neck, some will also incorporate devices to support the swing arm. Typically, depending on the manufacturer, holes exist in the holding device that will align to holes in the tubes for other mounting purposes. Some of these supportive structures are homemade, and can vary greatly. The basic rule is to make the base very sturdy and to have plenty of mechanisms for holding the framing tubes upright while you work. Using actual frame components as part of the jig fixtures can be extremely useful.

Bicycle Frame Jig

Whether you purchase a ready-made apparatus from a dealer or you decide to build your own, it is much easier to fabricate using a motorcycle frame jig. Another great plus is that some of these devices have built-in engine stands. Almost all of the commercial models will hold the completed frame for inserting the engine with a hoist. This can also be convenient when debating how to clean fuel injectors without bending over backward. There are multitudes of jig designs in use in homes, garages and custom workshops. Find one or make one that will work well for the frame you are fabricating.
